Lidar Technology

For most of us Lidar technology is an unfamiliar concept, but soon it will be part of our everyday life. Lidar is the sensor that is used for measuring distances with light and time. The sensor works by calculating the time it takes for the laser to bounce back from its target, it can then determine the distance.

Not new technology, it was invented in 1961 by the Hughes Aircraft company. First used for meteorically research. Historically Lidar has been used for military systems IE guided missiles surveying and mapping. The latest use for this advancing technology is used in self-driving cars or autonomous vehicles. The current market for these vehicles in 2022 is 103.4 thousand units. The Volume Forecast in 2030 is 3,195.5 thousand units, that’s a %56 CGAR annual growth rate.

Each standard size car uses on average 7 Lidar sensors. In the future these self-driving cars will use 300TB in software and memory to operate its on board systems. That is a lot of information. Reduction and storage of data is of key importance in the future. The future of autonomous cars!
